Elwood was born in Effort, PA, USA in 2012. He exploded onto the scene in July 2012 with a coming out party at Rainbow Mountain, a locally owned resort, restaurant and nightclub. There was food, singing, dancing, rainbow cupcakes and a naming contest! It was a fabulous night!
In January 2013, Elwood travelled to Orlando for his debut into the world of American craft. Everyone that passed by the booth loved Elwood and would smile or chuckle to themselves. And many shop owners stopped to order him for their gift shops and galleries across the country. It was also here that Jean Haller, editor-at-large for Retailing Insight Magazine, spotted him and named him best in show at ACRE Orlando!
In the summer of 2013, UncommonGoods showed interest in Elwood and asked for a sample. To test the market response, they snapped a quick photo and posted it on both their Instagram and Facebook and we were all blown away by the response. That night it was like watching the stock market as he continued to accumulate likes, hearts and tons of positive comments. Friends were tagging friends that loved unicorns, rainbows and all things whimsical and fun. It was decided that night that he would be featured on their website AND in their print catalog for holiday 2013.
While we were not really 100% prepared to launch Elwood into the spotlight right before the holidays, we said YES to the opportunity, and did our best to keep up with demand. He spent a lot of the time out of stock for the remainder of 2013, but it was fun to see so many people enjoying him. We received news that he would be featured in the catalog again for the V-Day 2014 issue. We ramped up production, bought another kiln and hired more help.
In August 2014, we received word from UncommonGoods that Elwood would be featured on the cover of the holiday issue. Whaaaaat?! Elwood would be a Cover Girl!! We were super excited and began shipping 200 units a week to prepare for what would surely be another busy holiday season. It was a much smoother experience the second time around. Before Black Friday hit, UG had over 900 units in stock and we didn’t hit the sell out point until much closer to Christmas, but sell out he did.
His mission in life is to spread the universal messages of peace, love and acceptance. Or maybe he just brings a smile to your face while you're enjoying your morning cuppa! Either way, we hope you enjoy him and we thank you for the years of support and all the lovely feedback we receive daily! <3
